Todd Sagin, M.D., J.D., is a physician executive recognized across the nation for his work with hospital boards, medical staffs, and physician organizations.

Dr. Sagin is a popular lecturer, consultant, mediator, and advisor to health care organizations. He is frequently asked to assist hospitals and physicians develop strong working relationships in the face of increasing competition and diverging interests. Dr. Sagin has been engaged by health system boards and medical staffs across the nation to develop successful integration strategies and help medical staffs and governing bodies understand the complexities of today’s healthcare environment.

Over the past two decades, he has worked with several hundred of the nation’s medical staffs on issues ranging from organizational redesign and bylaws revisions to medical staff strategic planning, peer review effectiveness, credentialing challenges, and leadership development. He is a frequent consultant to boards on a range of strategic and organizational concerns.

In recent years, his work has focused on hospital-physician alignment strategies, the restructuring of physician leadership in complex health systems, the merging of medical staffs within health systems, and assisting hospitals develop employed physicians into effective multidisciplinary group practices. His book, Creating the Hospital Group Practice: The Advantages of Employing or Affiliating with Physicians, was published by Health Administration Press in September of 2009.

Dr. Sagin is a speaker or faculty member for numerous national organizations including: The Governance Institute, American College of Healthcare Executives, American Association of Physician Leadership, National Association of Medical Staff Services, The Leadership Institute, and others. He is board-certified in family medicine and geriatrics and has taught and practiced in community hospital and university settings. He currently practices at Community Volunteers in Medicine in West Chester, PA. He serves as the chairman of the board of the national organization, Volunteers in Medicine, which supports the establishment of clinics for the uninsured all across America. Dr. Sagin has also served as an Examiner for the Balridge Performance Excellence Program.

An experienced physician executive, Dr. Sagin has held positions as VP & Chief Medical Officer of Temple University Health System in Philadelphia; Sr. Medical Director for PennCare, a 13 hospital integrated delivery system in Pennsylvania; Chairman & Clinical Professor of the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health at Temple University Medical School; residency director at Abington Memorial Hospital; & medical director of PHOs, IPAs, & hospital-physician networks. He served for over half a decade as the Vice President & National Medical Director of The Greeley Company, a division of HCPro, Inc.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sagin has held strong interests in medical ethics and public policy. He holds a degree in law and has training as a mediator and arbitrator to address health care conflicts. Dr. Sagin has also been active in organized medicine at the state and national level. He is a past president of the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians and has served on numerous national committees of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He sat for several years as a physician representative to the Joint Commission Professional and Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC) and on the JCAHO Special Credentialing Task Force. He currently serves as medical director of the Lifeguard Program sponsored by the Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. LifeGuard is a national competency assessment program that works to create remedial interventions for physicians who have developed clinical deficiencies that threaten their licensure or hospital privileges.

Dr. Sagin is a popular public speaker. His teaching won him the Golden Apple teaching award at Temple University School of Medicine. He frequently facilitates board and medical staff retreats and delivers leadership education to physicians and to health system trustees and executives.
